The Physical Challenge Of Hockey

Sunday, December 14th, 2008
Gray Rollins asked:

Hockey is one of the most physically demanding games known to man. This intense sport requires that a skater have as much strategy and skill as football or baseball player in addition to the strength that only a conditioned athlete can bring to the ice, and a kind of ferocity that is a rare quality indeed. Hockey players must tolerate quite a bit of pain and discomfort, and serious players must be able and willing to participate in very heavy training all through the year to remain competitive. Unlike many sports that primarily require endurance, Hockey is all about sudden short bursts of extremely intense activity. This makes hockey a very different kind of physical challenge than a sport like soccer where movement is lower-intensity but continuous.

A hockey player must be able to rev their personal engine from zero to sixty in a matter of seconds. At the pro level, a hockey player rarely spends more than a full minute at a time actively skating on the ice. Between those brief flurries of almost manic activity, a player can recover and catch his or her breath, but must remain alert and in readiness for the next explosion of action on the ice. Suddenly jumping from a fairly passive and relaxed state to the height of speed and power isn’t easy. The discipline and talent a hockey player must posses in order to do this well are often a large part of what separates the amateurs from the professionals.

The need to be able to swiftly transition from a state of rest to one of peak activity requires specific forms of training that focus on shortening response times and achieving graceful and efficient movement without much of a warm up. A hockey skater’s workout regimen contains many predictable activities like lifting weights and jogging, but one place where many players go in order to improve their agility and response time proves to be somewhat surprising to many sports fans.

Although classical music and pink tulle are the last things most people associate with the rough and tumble sport of hockey, many players train at ballet studios. From young boys and girls who are in amateur junior leagues all the way up to Olympic-level hockey players, spending time refining plies at the ballet barre often proves to give skaters a leg up on the ice.

From dance studios to weight rooms to jogging tracks, a hockey player must train his or her body in a variety of ways to prepare for what many consider the most physically demanding of all sports. Between the strenuous flurries of activity, the psychological stress of performance, the lack of warm up time, and the bulky padding of a hockey uniform, a player at the top level of competitive hockey may sweat away up to eight pounds of water weight during the course of a single game. There is no other sport where this kind of drastic weight loss due to exertion happens so quickly. A hockey player’s body must be prepared to safely weather this kind of ordeal on a regular basis, which requires a level of physical fitness that few other sports require.

National Hockey League– Pass, Hit and Goal

Thursday, December 11th, 2008
Robert Riles asked:

National hockey league is a game that features about 30 odd ice hockey teams and it was created way back in 1917 in Canada. It is part of the major leagues that takes place in North America and National hockey League is commonly referred to as NHL. The thirty teams are divided into two sects of fifteen teams in each who play in all major championships. When it was initially founded, it had only about 4 teams and over the years it has gone through a major metamorphosis and today has many more teams and is very popular around the world. Of the total playing teams, about 6 of them are in Canada and rest in America. Its only in the recent past that there have been teams from Europe who have joined this league and competing in major tournaments. The leading team in National Hockey League are the Montreal Canadiens followed by Toronto Maple leafs, other teams are all close on the heels of these teams. In America, the leading team is the Detroit Red Wings and New York Yankees.

All these states have a qualified team of players who represent them in all major league matches. The games are played in an indoor stadium for a duration of 60minutes, with both teams having a go at it, and whoever scores the most goals wins. If the teams are at a tie , having the same score, then overtime will be awarded and again whoever can score a couple of extra goals wins. The players will be given a penalty shot, which means they play solo against the goal keeper of the opponent team and try to score. There is no ball in this game, but a puck, and the players don’t play with bats, they use sticks. The ice hockey is a game played by those who have good balancing skills and are able to walk around on ice. It takes a lot of practice to get used to walking or skating on ice, and more so when running about playing a game, trying to dodge other players and focusing on the goal post.

Fans from America or familiar with the sport will remain loyal fans wherever they go and will either come back home to watch a match or find a way to watch it live. The Stanley cup championships is one of the most popular championships in National Hockey League and current leaders are the Montreal Canadians and the New York Yankees with most number of wins. The National Hockey league season is played in parts, in October and then a play off in April and finally the Stanley cup championships after the qualifying teams have played the seven series and come out winners. The premier hockey players are all professional players who have chosen this as a career option. And so, they spend their time representing their team, participating in one league after the other unless some injury forces them to rest and miss a match.

Be a True NHL Hockey Fan!

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008
Craig Rad asked:

Men and sports… there is no way to separate the two. Are you one of those guys who can’t stand missing a single hockey match? Are you tempted to spend all your income, just so you can go watch the NHL Hockey matches? Admit it, you are a fan! But don’t just sit in front of the TV, watching the NHL Hockey matches or don’t limit your supportive activity to going to the matches and screaming from the tribunes. What can I do more?, you might ask yourself. Well, be a true fan, a declared fan and supporter. How can you do that? Here is how!

For starters, you should know that there are wide ranges of fan clubs and associations that confirm your fan status. For example, there is the National Hockey League Fans’ Association and various clubs that can be found all over the country. The main association basically tries to unite all fans from all over the country in order to promote hockey as a business and, obviously, as a sport. Furthermore, these fan clubs and associations are concerned with gaining the fan’s power and speaking for the fans, in behalf of the fans.

If you are a true supporter, it is advisable to become a member of such an association, especially since, in most cases, this membership is free of charge - you will have access to the world behind the ice ring, you will have the chance to discuss and debate upon the NHL Hockey world. You might be surprised to find out that being a NHL Hockey fan pays of. How so? Well, the true fans can get free stuff in case they are part of fan clubs or fans’ associations - free tickets, free news, participations to hockey events and many more. And this is quite something!

Many lovers of this sport find it difficult to choose one single team and support only that team under all circumstances. NHL Hokey basically stands for the National Hockey League, the league that gathers all hockey teams in USA. So, if you are having troubles selecting just one team, the good news is that you don’t really need to support one specific team, you can be a fan of the game itself, if you are dedicated NHL Hockey fan, with a membership at a reputable association!

So now you know: instead of being passive and sitting comfortably in your armchair in front of the hockey matches on TV, you could be an active supporter and fan and get involved in this NHL Hockey fans community that can help you meet more fans like you, find out the latest news in your favorite sport and participate (even for free) at sportive championships.
